Prepare an isolated destination
You need permission to read the backup, an isolated restore target and a recovery key held by an authorized person if the archive is encrypted. Confirm that the destination cannot overwrite or boot into the production environment.
Record the backup identifier and time. Identify which services, external data stores and credentials are outside its scope. Do not assume a container archive includes every mounted data source.
Exercise recovery
- Check that the backup is readable and verify any integrity metadata supplied by the backup system.
- Have the authorized custodian unlock encrypted data without posting the recovery key in chat.
- Restore into the isolated target using the supported recovery workflow.
- Open representative data and run bounded application checks without connecting to production services.
- Record actual results, missing dependencies and the time needed to recover.
Decide what the result proves
Archive integrity proves that the checked bytes are intact. A successful isolated restoration adds evidence that the data and application can be recovered. Neither establishes every disaster scenario or guarantees an off-site copy is current.
If the test fails, retain the original backup, preserve nonsecret diagnostics and assign a corrective task. Do not change ownership, export permissions or isolation settings broadly just to make the exercise pass.
